What is QESCO?
Quetta Electric Supply Company, often known as QESCO (کوئٹہ الیکٹرک سپلائό کمپنό), is a power distribution company that serves 43% of Pakistan. Its operations are centered in Balochistan. With the exception of the Lasbela district, it is in charge of providing electricity to the whole Balochistan region.
On July 1, 1998, it commenced operations subsequent to WAPDA’s corporate reorganization and commercialization. Following the transformation of the previous Energy District Board into a company, QESCO assumed responsibility for the management of WAPDA’s (واٍɈا) assets and obligations. QESCO is currently managed by the Pakistani government’s Ministry of Water and Power.
Despite having the fewest customers, QESCO is under a great deal of strain because 70–80% of the demand for power comes from agricultural consumers.
Because there is just one 220 KV source available from Guddu and the generating sources are far apart, the system is now experiencing low voltage problems. At an annual growth rate of 8%, the peak demand for power is predicted to reach 1659 MW by 2015. Two 2×220 KV transmission lines—whose estimated costs are Rs 5.437 and 5.089 billion, respectively—have been cleared for investment in order to remedy this problem. The province will have access to an extra 600–700 MW of power upon the commissioning of these sources, easing the low voltage profile concerns. Currently, the safe drawl of power is 721 MW.
In addition to improving load management, QESCO is changing from a public to a private company. Plans call for renting out power houses in Quetta, Sibi, and Khuzdar. By taking these steps, the low voltage profile issues that are common throughout the area will be lessened.
